Nic and Evelien’s wedding at Terre di Nano
Nic and Evelien came from Belgium with their two children, the youngest still very small, to get married at Terre di Nano, an agriturismo in the countryside just outside Pienza, in the heart of the Val d’Orcia.
It was one of the hottest days of the summer, so they did something I often suggest: they got married in the morning.
The ceremony was held in the spot where weddings at Terre di Nano usually take place, under an arch of pampas grass and dried flowers, with the hills behind them and white parasols for the guests.
An aperitivo followed, and then everyone rested for a few hours through the hottest part of the day.
In the late afternoon we drove into Pienza for the portraits: the quiet stone lanes, the old doors and the courtyard of Palazzo Piccolomini.
Back at Terre di Nano, dinner was served at long tables under the olive trees, with local cheeses and handmade pasta.
Nic and Evelien had their first dance right there among the trees, before the party moved indoors.
The cake was made in front of everyone, like a small show: a millefeuille with chocolate, berries and strawberries, built by the pastry chef with the couple’s help.
Wedding Venue
Terre di Nano, Pienza: the venue
Terre di Nano is an agriturismo a few minutes from Pienza, reached by a long drive lined with cypresses.
It has stone farmhouses, a pool, an olive grove that works beautifully for a long dinner, and a ceremony spot with an open view over the Val d’Orcia.
There is also an indoor space for dancing, so the party can go on late without disturbing anyone.
Pienza, Montepulciano and Montalcino are all within half an hour, which makes it easy to add portraits in town to the day.

Planning a wedding at Terre di Nano?
- Summer heat: in July and August the middle of the day is very hot in the Val d’Orcia.
A morning ceremony with a rest in the afternoon, as Nic and Evelien did, or a ceremony after 5 pm, keeps everyone comfortable. - Portraits in Pienza: the town is a short drive away.
The lanes and the courtyard of Palazzo Piccolomini are quieter in the late afternoon, when the day visitors have left. - The cypress drive: the entrance to Terre di Nano is a natural spot for a few portraits on the way in or out.
- Dinner and dancing: dinner under the olive trees, a first dance outdoors, then the party indoors.
- Getting there: about 1 hour from Siena, 1 hour 45 minutes from Florence and 2 hours from Rome.
